Good day fine reader, nice to welcome you here to a new college of Dutch Designers Outlet her Lingerie and Swimwear expert. In this blog I will take you through the lifespan of your bra. Because how do you make sure your bra stays beautiful as long as possible? And when do you know it's time for a new one? I'll give you practical tips to extend its lifespan!
The average lifespan of a bra
A high quality bra will last longer than a lower quality bra. But on average, a bra will last about 6 to 10 months. This is based on regular use and proper maintenance. Still, the lifespan can vary due to factors such as the quality of the material. But the frequency of wearing and the way of washing also play a role. Let's take a closer look at these factors, shall we?
Factors affecting the lifespan of a bra
The quality of the material determines a lot. A bra made from high-quality fabrics such as sturdy elastane or microfiber retains its shape and elasticity better than cheaper materials. Invest rather in a quality bra that allows you to enjoy comfort and support for longer rather than a cheap bra which over time has little function.
How often you wear your bra also plays a role. Wearing the same bra daily causes faster wear. Alternate with multiple bras; this allows the fabric and elastic to "recover" in between. There is a stress on the materials and by changing every day you give these materials time to return to their original shape.
A good washing routine is also very important for preserving your bras. Wash a bra after two to three wears to remove sweat and oils that can affect elasticity. Use a fine wash cycle or, even better, hand wash the bra to avoid damage. I wrote about this in detail in my blog"How to wash bra?".
More tips to extend the life of your bra
In the previous paragraphs, you can already deduce some tips that extend the life of your bra. I do have a few more for you. When you do wash your bra in a washing machine, at least use a laundry bag and avoid high temperatures, and fabric softener. The dryer is no friend to your bra either! The temperature can damage the elasticity and shape of the fabric.
Lay your bra to air dry. Flat on a towel or on the laundry rack. Do not hang her, the weight of the water will stretch the band. After drying, carefully store your bras. Don't stack them on top of each other, but lay them flat to avoid distortion. Finally, also air your bra after wearing it, so that moisture can evaporate.
When is it time to replace your bra?
You can easily recognize a worn-out bra. For example, by the cups losing their shape or wrinkling. As a result, the bra no longer fits the breasts properly. Are you wearing an underwire bra? The bra needs to be replaced when the underwire is broken or protruding. Less visible, but also a good reason to throw the bra in the trash, is when it has lost its elasticity. When the straps and back panel lose their elasticity, the bra no longer provides the necessary support.
What about sports bras?
Sports bras have a heavier life than your everyday bra. This is because they are more heavily loaded. Sweat and exercise cause them to lose their elasticity and support faster. Fortunately, today there are sports bras made of materials that can better withstand these conditions. With regular use, a good sports bra usually lasts 6 to 12 months. Pay particular attention to the strength of the straps, cups and elastics. For runners or intense athletes, I recommend replacing your sports bras more often. The right bra size for your body has more than just a good response to your breasts
Wearing the right bra size is important for both comfort and the longevity of your bra. This is because the wrong size can cause discomfort, as well as affect the reaction of your skin and the longevity of the material. If a bra is too tight, it can affect its elasticity, while a bra that is too loose does not give the breasts enough support. As a result, it will lose its shape faster.
Finding the right size is therefore important and in my blog"The importance of calculating the right bra size" I help you step by step in finding the ideal bra size that fits your body. By wearing the right size, you will enjoy longer the support and the look that a well-fitting bra gives you.
You don't get rid of a bra lightly
A good bra is often a big investment. Especially when you consider that they last up to a year and you have to alternate them. That means at least four bras in your closet. Not to mention bras for sports or a festive occasion! I understand like no other that you feel it for a moment when a favorite bra disappears into the trash. Still, a bra remains an investment in comfort and self-confidence. So choose quality and take good care of your bras so you can enjoy them for a long time.
